  1.         Enter a description of your problem in the Begin Conflict Isolation dialog 
  2.  box, then click ‚ÄúOK.‚Äù Since Conflict Isolation takes some time, this description
  3.  helps to remind you of your objective later on. Next, mark any extensions that
  4.  are essential to the basic use of your Macintosh by clicking to the left of
  5.  their names (example: you can‚Äôt mount file servers without the AppleShare
  6.  extension). Don‚Äôt mark any unnecessary items, because Conflict Isolation skips
  7.  over them as a group. Once you‚Äôve turned on any essential extensions, restart
  8.  your Macintosh (or click ‚ÄúOK‚Äù in the Now Startup Manager control panel if
  9.  you‚Äôve opened it during the startup sequence).

  11.         A startup crash is easy to confirm ‚Äî startup is completed (Pass), or it‚Äôs
  12.  interrupted by a crash (Fail). However, if the problem occurs after startup,
  13.  you must duplicate the actions that trigger it to determine the result: a Pass
  14.  (problem didn‚Äôt occur) or Fail (problem did occur). When you know the answer,
  15.  restart your Macintosh. Now Startup Manager opens automatically and asks if the
  16.  test result was a Pass or a Fail. Click the appropriate button, or click 
  17.  ‚ÄúRetry‚Äù to repeat the test.

  19.         Conflict Isolation begins with all non-essential extensions turned off. If this
  20.  test Fails, you must have a problem with your system software or the essential
  21.  extensions themselves; you‚Äôll probably want to reinstall them. If the first
  22.  test Passes, Now Startup Manager narrows down the startup items and resumes
  23.  startup. Retest the problem, then restart, to complete a restart cycle.

  25.         The more extensions that are initially active, the more restart cycles there
  26.  must be. Continue until the Conflict Isolation results are displayed in a
  27.  dialog box. Buttons in the dialog box let you turn off the problem extension;
  28.  reorder it relative to other conflicting extensions; or perform additional
  29.  testing to detect a three-way conflict (rare).

  31.         During this process, a Conflict Isolation Log is created in the main window
  32.  of your hard disk. Open this file for a detailed progress report, which can be
  33.  helpful if you need to contact a software publisher or help desk for further
